Schewels Home Company

Schewels Home operates about 50 retail furniture and bedding stores in Virginia, West Virginia, and North Carolina. In addition to home furnishings, the chain sells appliances, electronics, carpeting, and related accessories. Typical store units average 18,000 sq. ft. and primarily target the lower- and middle-income markets. Newer stores are larger, in the 40,000-55,000 square foot range. Customers can also browse furniture collections and other items available at Schewels Home stores through the company's Web site. The family-run company, now in its fourth generation of management, got its start in 1897 when Elias Schewel began selling small furniture pieces out of his horse-drawn wagon.
