Orlando Magic Company

Orlando Magic
This organization hopes to work a little voodoo on the basketball court. The Orlando Magic is a professional basketball franchise that joined the National Basketball Association in 1989. A surprising upstart, Orlando made its first playoff appearance in 1994 with the help of star center Shaquille O'Neal and reached the NBA Finals the following season, losing to the Houston Rockets in four games. (O'Neal left the following year to join the Los Angeles Lakers.) Founded by local businessman Jim Hewitt, the team holds court at Orlando's Amway Arena; the family of Amway co-founder Rich DeVos has owned the Magic through RDV Sports since 1991. The team brought in Steve Van Gundy to be head coach in 2007 following an aborted attempt to hire University of Florida basketball coach Billy Donovan. During his inaugural season, Orlando reached the second round of the NBA playoffs. The Magic won its second conference title in 2009 by defeating LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers in six games. However, they lost in the NBA Finals to the Los Angeles Lakers. The team moved into a $480 million new arena for the 2010 season. Michigan-based direct-sales company Amway signed a 10-year, $40 million naming rights deal to call the new facility Amway Center. Through RDV Sports, the DeVos family owns the RDV Sportsplex entertainment and fitness center. They previously owned the WNBA Orlando Miracle (sold in 2002).
