About Marine Biological Laboratory

The Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL) is a private, nonprofit institution dedicated to scientific discovery and improving the human condition through research and education in biology, biomedicine, and environmental science. Founded in 1888 and affiliated with the University of Chicago since 2013, the MBL is one of the oldest and most eminent private research laboratories in the United States.

The MBL has approximately 250 year-round employees, about half of which are scientists and science support staff. However, the number of scientists and students in residence over the course of an entire year exceeds 1,200, especially in the summer months, when scores of investigators come from around the world to carry out research or teach in advanced research-based training courses.

Located in the picturesque village of Woods Hole, Massachusetts on Cape Cod, the MBL is literally steps from the Atlantic Ocean. Living on Cape Cod offers many great benefits including miles of beaches, sailing, fishing, hiking, canoeing, camping and biking on the Shining Sea Bikeway. And for those looking for a metropolitan area to explore as well, Boston and Providence are short drives away.

Working at the MBL gives you the opportunity to partner with award winning scientists and researchers, leading the way on scientific innovation, in an ideal setting. The Marine Biological Laboratory offers a variety of career opportunities, ranging from the biological, ecological, and marine research sciences to administrative and technical positions. A friendly and casual working environment that benefits fully from the educational and recreational resources offered within the Woods Hole community is one of the many highlights of employment at the MBL.
