The buzz about the University of Rochester is music to some ears. While the private, upstate New York research university is nationally recognized for its programs in medicine, engineering, and business, its Eastman School of Music (founded by Eastman Kodak founder George Eastman) is one of the top music schools in the US. With an endowment of more than $1.3 billion, the university offers about more than 200 academic majors and about 30 master's and doctoral degree programs to some 9,300 undergraduate and graduate students. The school boasts a 9:1 student-teacher ratio. Founded as a Baptist-sponsored institution in 1850, the university is nonsectarian today.
