About Frederick National Laboratory

The Frederick National Laboratory is the only U.S. national laboratory wholly focused on research, technology, and collaboration in the biomedical sciences — working to discover, to innovate, and to improve human health.

Staff of the Frederick National Laboratory are addressing some of the most urgent problems in the biomedical sciences — in cancer and AIDS, drug development and first-in-human clinical trials, applications of nanotechnology in medicine, and rapid response to emerging threats of infectious disease.

Our scientists conduct basic, hypothesis-driven research and collaborative studies that span a wide range, including genetics, genomics, protein science, proteomics, bioinformatics, high-performance biomedical computing, laboratory animal sciences, and clinical operations.

Our Nanotechnology Characterization Laboratory — a partnership with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the National Institutes of Standards and Technology — is pioneering medical applications of nanotechnology to fight cancer, AIDS, and other diseases.

We operate two Current Good Manufacturing Practice facilities that produce pharmaceuticals for first-in-human clinical trials. One facility supports drug discovery and development for the National Cancer Institute and the other for the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

We anchor the national RAS Initiative, an intensive effort to understand the mechanism of a mutant protein implicated in one-third of cancers and almost all pancreatic cancers, and how to create therapeutic agents that will be effective against these diseases. The Frederick National Laboratory serves as the hub in a hub-and-spoke model that reaches out to involve academic, commercial, government, and nonprofit organizations across the country in a united effort.

As a shared national resource, we offer access to high-technology capabilities, provide selected science and technology services, and maintain vast repositories of research materials available to biomedical investigators nationwide. These include more than 15 million biological specimens, frozen tumor samples, research reagents, and genetically engineered mouse models of human cancers.

The Frederick National Laboratory provides rapid response to emerging health threats, mobilizing effective resources to address disease outbreaks and investigate newly recognized pathogens. We also monitor more than 400 ongoing human clinical trials in the United States and overseas.

With about 2,000 employees, we occupy laboratories and offices at Advanced Technology Research Facility at Riverside Research Park in Frederick, Md., additional facilities at the National Cancer Institute's 68-acre campus adjacent to the Fort Detrick Army base, and other locations along the I-270 technology corridor, in Bethesda, Md., and at sites around the world.
