About Chugachmiut

Chugachmiut is an Alaska Native 501 (c) 3 non-profit agency incorporated in 1974 to serve the seven Native tribes in the Chugach Region. A seven-member Board of Directors governs Chugachmiut; each board member selected by their tribal government. The Board of Directors appoints the Executive Director who manages the day-to-day operations of the organization.

Today, Chugachmiut manages a 14 million dollar budget that includes compacts with the Indian Health Service (IHS) and the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA). These compacts constitute a large portion of the annual budget. Other programs are funded by the State of Alaska, the federal government or private granting foundations. Chugachmiut works with all tribes to pursue funding in areas such as economic infrastructure, health care, heritage and language preservation, behavioral health, Information Technology and Self-Governance.

Chugachmiut has continually developed, strengthened and broadened its primary role as a regional deliverer of health and social services. Health services include primary care, diabetes prevention and education, tobacco control and prevention, pharmacy, dental and nutrition and fitness education and counseling.

Chugachmiut offers state and federal programs aimed at wellness and strong families including domestic violence intervention, childcare and general assistance for needy families. Chugachmiut also administers Head Start, a forestry/land use program and extensive behavioral health services and programs. There are programs aimed at assisting tribes in self-determination through grants from the Economic Development Administration, US Department of Agriculture and Housing and Urban Development.
